The mountain road between Alajuela and Sarapiquí climbs through cloud forest, past dairy farms and strawberry stands, and over the shoulder of an active volcano. Vara Blanca is cold, green and almost always wet — this is where the clouds get caught.
Two of the most-visited sights in the country sit here: the crater of Poás and the waterfalls of La Paz. Both are worth the trip. Both are also forty minutes from Bajos del Toro, where the same cloud forest holds waterfalls almost nobody visits.
